Temporary pavilion

As part of my research I decided to further investigate other small spaces that could help advance my own practice for this project. I looked at this small temporary pavilion designed by Markus Heinsdorf. This is a very interesting design; the space is made from bamboos to start with. The flexibility of a bamboo based design means that it can create very interesting forms and shapes; maybe this is something I could use for my cube design.

Though quite modest in scale, the German-Chinese pavilion erected for the Expo 2010 Shanghai attracts attention by virtue of the materials used and its transparent structure. The bamboo canes, for example, are giant stems up to 23 cm in diameter with stainless-steel node fittings concreted into the ends. The spatial enclosure is formed by a screen supported by a bamboo-veneered steel SHS structure, while the internal platform is borne by specially developed beams in laminated bamboo. Together with the bamboo parquet and furniture, these elements demonstrate the versatility of this renewable raw material.
