Making a Cube

The start of a new academic year, filled with anticipation and excitement.  This is my final year studying Interior Design, and the future is approaching faster than a train. It’s time to start making decisions and thinking about life after graduation. As the class gathered in contemplation, the tutor set an enthralling exercise which divided the class into three groups of six. The exercise was to create an eight metre cube using a tape, lining paper rolls, roll of tracing paper, electric tape, and a ball of string. The lack of instruction in this task insinuated the need of team work and effort.

At first I was unsure of the relevance of this task, however as the task progressed, a sudden realisation hit me. This task has all the elements of being an Interior Designer, and this means working as a team, being creative and finding solution to any issue detected. It was a great way to ease back into the arduous and gruelling university life. As my team and I began constructing this cube, I found myself intensively thinking about what sort of Interior Designer I could be. This exercise was almost a way of unconsciously engaging the mind solely on interior design. The whole atmosphere in the room also reflected on the nature of this exercise. Personality I found the task fun and rather relaxing.

We began constructing the cube by cutting with a scissors the string. The string was cut two metre long and it was the same dimension for each corners. Using the iron string across the room, we tied a knot which would represent the vertical edge of the cube. Furthermore we tied another knot from the same edge to create a horizontal string and the same process was done to each corner to create a competed cube. The next step was to create the walls which consisted of tracing papers, the paper was taped against the vertical string for the wall to create some resistance, the same thing was done with the ceiling but instead it was taped with the horizontal string.
