Velvet Fabric

I also looked at velvet for a possible material to use for my interior walls, this was to give myself as much options as possible.

Velvet is a type of woven tufted fabric in which the cut threads are evenly distributed, with a short dense pile, giving it a distinctive feel. The word 'velvety' is used as an adjective to mean "smooth like velvet." Velvet can be either synthetic or natural.
The plush feel of upholstery velvet is quite welcoming and is one of the main reasons that people opt for it. It is usually soft to touch and blends with many décor styles. This velvet is available in a variety of solid colour and printed styles. It is also double-woven, which gives it a particularly luxurious feel. If the rich feel of a fabric is one of the most important factors to a person, then upholstery velvet may be a good choice.

One of the biggest disadvantages of upholstery velvet is that it can be quite difficult to clean. This is especially true if the fabric has been stained. Usually, manufacturers recommend dry cleaning for velvet garments, but this is not possible for upholstery velvet. Instead, a user would need to vacuum regularly to remove surface dirt and use a steam carpet cleaner to get stains out.

Upholstery velvet also tends to wear of quickly with rough use. The soft side of the fabric needs gentle use and care to remain soft and not become matted or simply fade. Once this happens, the fabric needs to be replaced. This, coupled with the difficulty of removing stains and dirt from the fabric, makes it a poor choice for homes with small children.

Leather

I looked at leather as the material to use for my interior walls to allow the client to use it to lean against and rest against it. There are many types of leather which some contains chemicals that are considered not eco-freindly, so I did a little bit more research to find a leather which is the exact opposite. Vegetable tanned leather therefore is the perfect material to use for my interior walls because of it environment friendly process.

Vegetable tanning is an ancient and traditional craft process that tanneries have passed down over the years, using both ancient recipes and more recently state-of-the-art technology.
Vegetable tanning shows off leather in its most natural state and you can really see the skill in the tanning process and also the finished product.
The transformation from raw hides into a material that will last a long time is a process that happens slowly in wooden drums or in tanning pits. Vegetable tanning is the most environmentally friendly way to tan leather; there are no chemicals used respecting the environment due to the use of natural ingredients rather than chemicals. It is an astonishing process based on the use of natural tanning, using modern technologies and machinery but mainly it relies on the slow passage of time.
Among the various tanning methods, vegetable tanning is the most traditional and the most recognisable; it is the only form of tanning that is able to give leather unique characteristics, retaining the natural flaws and markings. It is also the most environmental-friendly. It is able to join comfort and look, fashion and tradition, uniqueness and versatility in the product.

Raw materials used for vegetable tanning are natural tanning, available in liquid or powder form, obtained from different part of plants including woods, barks, fruits, fruit pods and leaves. The most common tannins are obtained from Chestnut wood, Quebracho wood, Tara pods, Chinese gallnut, Gambier, Mimosa bark, Oak wood, Turkish gallnut and Valonia Oak.

ADVANTAGES OF VEGETABLE TANNING
·         Vegetable tanning is environmentally friendly; meaning any leather products that have been vegetable tanned can be recycled.
·         Vegetable tanning is an age old tradition, so most tanneries have very skilled craftsmen producing and dyeing the leather.
·         Due to the natural tannins used, vegetable tanned products are unique and have their own life, they are not the same for their entire life, but they change, continuously, for the better developing a patina over time.
·         The colours that vegetable tanning produces are rich and warm tones that look completely natural.
·         Vegetable tanned leathers are more valuable and thus sold at a higher average price compared to chrome tanned leathers.

Inspiration

My inspiration for this design came from my own experience. I had a 8 hour wait at Dubai airport which was very painful. There was no place to sleep and the only option was a very rough bench with arm rests that denied a full stretch. I thought for this reason, a capsule hotel in an airport designed for short stays up to 8 hours, this will make the journey more comfortable and relaxing. Images below are images that inspired my ideas.

Final design and render

After taking every research into consideration, I have come up with a design that I feel fit my concept, the idea of movement and speed is reflected in the design. The design is not just a pace to sleep, but it offers few very different sleeping and resting option that is so rare in in an airport. The design allows the client to use the ceiling of the cube as a sleeping space, a chrome ladder shaped organically allows client to climb into this space. The interior offers a different way of resting, with the inspiration of Verner Panton living tower, I have designed a sleep area inspired by the living tower. There is a flying chair which can be adjusted to provide different heights depending on the client, if they desire to be elevated or stay low on the ground, but the idea is to create a space that reflects on the nature of airplanes, which means changes in height, and movement and that is the case with this design. the space also gives the client a chance to create their own experience by designing their own way of sleeping using the modular chair, the modular chair consists of sets of cushion that can be joined together to create a seating or a bed, so now the client has few options of a comfortable wait in an airport that usually does not guarantee comfort.

Optical fibre

I looked at optical fibre lighting for my interior space. Fibre lighting offers an interesting effect that can very well fit with the concept of speed as it can be manipulated to create different effects and also different colours could be applied to create strong effects.

Flying chair

Flying chair is also a furniture designed by Verner Panton. This design could be used in my interior space and it is an innovative design that could inspire my own design.
